How to use:
To have an MP3 play at startup, install this package, and copy the MP3s you'd like to hear to /Library/Application Support/StartupSound/

There is one pre-installed MP3 available to test if the installation worked right; it is one of a cow.  Reboot, and enjoy!

Oh, yeah:  The installer app says the installation will take 100 MB.  Hooey.  It only takes maybe 1 MB at most.

Known Issues:
This packages uses mpg123 to play the sounds.  Should, for some reason, mpg123 not like the encoding of the MP3, it may make clicks or chirps in the audio, may play the sound at an unacceptable speed, or simply not play the MP3 at all.  Should you experience this, you may need to re-encode the MP3 file.  This should be fixed in coming updates of the Mac OS X audio drivers for mpg123.

Optimal settings for mpg123 seem to be:  44.1 KHz, stereo or joint-stereo, 16-bit audio.  Any bitrate should do just fine.

You may also experience issues if you have a file in /Library/Application Support/StartupSound/ that is not an MP3.  Remove any non-MP3 files from the folder.


Testing:
This software has been tested on Mac OS 10.0.4, and works fine.  There should be no issue with previous versions of the OS.  One can only hope that it will work well in subsequent versions; perhaps Apple should seed me a pre-release of 10.1   :-)
