StartupSound for Mac OS X
Remember in OS 9 how you could have a startup sound by putting a sound into "Startup Items" in the System Folder? Of course, in OS X, you could make an application auto-launch at login to play a sound for you, but how much fun would that be? Frankly, the real disturbing state of OS X right now is that we can't play startup sounds!!!
But fear no more: StartupSound is here. Download, mount the disk image, and
install. Place your favorite MP3s in /Library/Application Support/StartupSound/ and
enjoy them as they make your Mac sing.
This is version 1.1. 1.0 isn't available anymore, and, frankly, there's no reason that you would really want it. The only change is that I placed StartupSound in the spot for 3rd party sounds. I also checked through Apple's documentation about startup items, and, everything seems kosher with the spec. from them. Remember, kids, if your computer starts on fire after installing this, it's not my fault.
As far as compatibility goes, since the readme was written, I have tested it on Mac OS X, 10.0 through 10.3.8, and it works just fine. The admonitions in the readme about MP3 encoding are still valid.
